Hi!

My garden needs a good overhaul.. is it yet time to chuck all the hanging baskets? Can I didg up my courgettes / squash etc and leave the parsnips there and plant out the carrots and leeks I have ready in the greenhouse?
Can I start planting bulbs yet and how do I do that?

Any advice?

Thanks,

jan

I chuck out ( sorry, compost) plants gradually from September throug til spring.
If your veg plants have finished producung dig them up - except peas which if left will put valuable nutrients back into the soil. Their roots are nitrogen fixing.
Same with hanging baskets if they are past thier best, take them down - you could replace the plants with primulas, pansies, violas and small ivies.
Some plants I don't cut back til spring. They provide winter shelter for insects eg ladybirds and give the garden structure.
Finally plant all bulbs now or October except tulips which are best left til November.
