when will my sweet peppers be ready?

Growing them for the first time - the long ones.
They were outside in July when it was really hot but are now back in my little plastic greenhouse.
Will they go red on the plant or will I need to pick them and put in a sunny window. I've already tried this but the pepper just went soft. Also one or two are going soft on the plant. HELP, please.

I live in Scotland chestnutty so wouldn't contemplate putting peppers outside. Ours are ready now and this year they have gone red. This is only the second year we have grown them, but last year they didn't get any further than green.

Not sure what to do about them going soft though. I am a novice I'm afraid.

some of mine are green and some have turned yellow and one went red but I grow them in a green house in Surrey. Had some tonight in my sweet and sour.

Some of mine have gone red. Ate the first one today!

Mine have suffered about - seem to go rotten at the ends. But, still have a few good ones. Todays one was almost all red but I couldnt wait any longer

Oooohh some of mine went sort of faded and soft at the tips too.. anyone know why? Will consult the oracle in the morning!!

so perhaps mine are just to cold in the plastic greenhouse. I don't hav the time to look after a full sized greenhouse. Thanks for all your comments.

Wahey! i know this is an old thread but I planted my seeds a bit late anyway, I've finally got yellow, orange and red peppers in my greenhouse (as well as the unripened green ones (hoping for some more sunshine so they don't stay that way), long ones and bell ones. They look great. went a bit over the top and have 12 mature plants (easy to do when you sow your own seed, felt mean throwing away the smaller ones too) Best of all they are so easy to freeze as you don't have to blanch them .

Glad yours grew, ruthlouise. Mine never got past green, then they started to rot but they were only in one of those plastic greenhouse thingys.

I still have more ripening but don't think they'll all make it. Next year I will definately sow the seeds indoors earlier. I used to have one of those plastic greehouses and it used to be very damp inside as there was no proper ventilation and I had similar problems with rotting then we had a very windy day and that was the end of the plastic! Now I use the frame covered in netting to protect other crops from birds and butterflies etc. We were lucky to get two free greenhouses out of the local paper - just had to go and dismantle them from their owners gardens.
