Are these weeds or proper plants!?

I really want to tidy my garden up! Last year I returfed some of the borders etc and although it's generally tidyish at the moment I'd really like to replant the back border and on the right hand side where the fence panels will be replaced.

The garden is shaded by 2 huge mature oak trees but does get some sun late in the day, apart from the corner by the GP hutch which virtually never gets full sun.

Are there any particular plants to look for which won't be desperately expensive? I'd like lavender bushes but I know they like the sun.

Lavender plants don't need full sun.

What is the question in the title relating to?

All the plants in the back border really, think the leaves are all weeds, they had yellow flowers on briefly but I couldn't identify them.

If it is mostly weeds in the back border I'd like to dig it outand plant it up with something that'll look tidy and last a few years.

The yellow flowers look like Welsh poppies. I quite like them, they do seed themselves and spread though.

You need to take closer photos but if you don't know what they are you won't miss them right?

Do you like them? That's really the only definition of a weed - a plant where you don't want it.

I'd be tempted to dig the whole lot up if you don't like any of it particularly. Then plant something perennial and tip a load of bark chips round the plants to stop the weeds.
