Poppies

In a previous house I had a clump of poppies that seemed to come up every year, about 30" high, big, various-coloured flowers and large seedheads.

I grew from seed some named-variety last year, red with black eye, 20", and they have just started flowering.

Will I have to grow new ones each year, or do the plants live after flowering?

I thought all poppies die back after flowering but reappear perennially. And seed quite freely too.

they seem to have a good root. Interfering neighbour pulled some up claiming they were thistles, but one has thrown up sturdy leaves from the stump.

Some poppies are perennial, some are annual. Depends on what you have, really.
