I have an area of slabs laid on earth (ie no mortar). Of course weeds grow in the gaps, but have just discovered (years since laying them) how easy it is to remove them by just lifting the edge of a slab. I'm also surprised every year how shallow-rooted most weeds are, so easy to pull up. Not dandelions, though
