Toddler proof planter

We have a white plastic self-watering indoor planter containing a large and healthy Kentia Palm. The soil is covered with stones the size of large marbles for decoration. Our DD, 8 months, will soon start crawling and we're worried that she will try to eat, and choke on, the stones. Do you have any suggestions about what we could replace them with (bare soil would seem even less desirable)? It would be a shame to have to throw out the whole plant.

How about bigger stones, large enough that you don't have to worry about a risk of choking?

Anything small risks being scattered around the whole house by a baby.

Yes, something like slate chips might work. If you get the larger chips, they should be too big for your baby to put in her mouth. Go and see what your lical garden centre/builder's merchant has to offer.
