Another stupid question

If I stick a tree stake into the ground, can I grow a climbing rose up it?

At Great Dixter, they grow clematis - which is probably a lighter plant than a climbing rose - up huge posts (round, from memory about 8 ft tall and charred at the bottom). Could you try that?
