Wtf has the builder done to my plant!!?

Had lovely new uvpc windows fitted in my house today, the builder phoned while I was at work and said he might have to trim the 'plant back a bit for acsess'.

I've returned home I this! What on earth?! Is the plant salvageable? Is there anything I should do?
It's been there 10 years and it's 90% gone! My landlord is coming to see the new windows tomorrow and I'm scared it's going to be all my fault because I gave the builders permissions to trim it!

Plants are fairly tough, it may well survive it.

As for the landlord: if it was his builder then he can't reasonably blame you. You were told by the builder he was going to trim the plant, not scalp it.

Is it a Yucca? If so,they are damn near impossible to kill.I think you'll be fine.

Yukka? Yes it will be there long after you have fertilised someone else's garden.

It looks like a cordyline to me - he should have just run some string around the leaves and pulled them all up together and tied themwhilst he fitted the windows and then removed the string and the leaves would have just opened out again - what a complete idiot! I would be livid.
If it is a cordyline then those leaves removed/pruned will not grown back but the top centre of the plant produces more leaves in the top and gradually the older leaves at the bottom fall off. It will take a year or so to look better.
If you wish you can cut the whole trunk back towards ground level and this will encourage the plant to shoot from the sides upwards making the shrub 'multi-stemmed' (and in my opinion more attractive). Hope this is understandable.
