Our mower has packed up and I need to buy a new one. Not much time to research and I find tinterweb confusing on this issue tbh. Need big grass box, capable of managing long grass and rough terrain, not bothered about stripes etc... Trying to spend as little as possible but £250 would be top budget.

Any thoughts?

Honda. I recently upgraded to Hayter at great expense and it's been nothing but trouble. I miss my reliable Honda.

I would have said Honda too but I find ours heavy and it was expensive. Have a look at a mountfield if you want a petrol one.

Reconditioned Honda. Fantastic. Didn't get on with the mountfield....

Where did you get your reconditioned honda? A local firm or is there a national outfit which does such things? My parents had one which lasted 30 years but I think new they're going to be out of our price range. The one which has died was a Mountfield. Did 7 (fairly hard) years but I had hoped for more...

I got it from one of those fancy lawnmower shops selling things I can't afford and don't need. The kind of place that specialises in servicing. They had taken the Honda as part exchange. It starts like a bloody dream and the blade is fantastic - it could be 5 year old but there's no way I could afford one new.

I'm in east Cambs/west Suffolk if you are close I can pm names

Most Mountfield mowers use Honda engines in them.

Ours was Briggs and Stratton, but I will look more closely...
