hanging plants for wall trough planters now?

what could I plant now to make the front of my house look nice? the troughs are high up (approx 6 feet up) so needs to be something which would hang nicely, with instant effect. Pansies - too small, too early for usual hanging basket bedding.

Am I stuck with trailing ivy?

at this stage of the season yes. but you could put in some grasses to go up higher than pansies
