Title says it all really. Just wondered if anyone is and when do you know they are ripe for picking? I grew some last year, and just guessed, and they were OK if a little tough (the skin that is).

Are they ridge cucumbers? The ridge ones have really tough skins, I have always peeled them before eating them.

Really you can pick them at any size you like, you can't pick them too early. Don't leave them until the skins start to go yellow, that can make them a bit acidic. It's best to pick them early rather than late because that way you encourage more flowers, and so will get more cucumbers too.

I don't know what type they are tbh. A friend gave them to me, they are very dark green and have spiky white bits on the skin at the moment.

Ridge cucumbers are shorter and thicker than "vine" cucumbers, and they grow on the ground rather than climb. They are usually quite lumpy and bumpy, and definitely have spiky white bits on their skins. They're very tasty and really sweet - but you do have to take the skins off because they're tough and bitter.
