I've bought a little potted Xmas tree

Impulse purchase at a garden centre, such a bargain at £10. It's about 3ft tall. Now what do I do with it! I thought about potting it, someone else advised planting it in the ground, someone else said they go mad in the ground and to pot it to keep it smallish (which sounds sensible). Any thoughts? What sort of pot? Size of pot? Type of soil? How to care for it etc.

Plant it in the garden and put lights on at Christmas.
