Help.. bindweed taking over the world

mrsnoah · 25/07/2006 22:55

what do we do ? we think its bindweed. It has heart shaped green leaves and white trumpetlike flowers.
Its also growing up the side of the hen run and am a bit anxious about putting weed killer on it and that making its way into the hens' eggs.
Advice please ?

It is definitely bindweed from that desctiption
It's a bugger
HAve to admit I have simply pulled a load out then sprayed when it starts to grow back

Yes that is bindweed, it is a bastard to get rid of but it takes over if you don't. You need Round Up or similar. I have been told to spray carefully when you know it is not going to rain for a few days and it should be OK.

Agree its bindweed. The problem with this weed is that if you leave one tiny bit of root left in the ground it will send up shoots from it.

PLUS the root snaps very easily. I still get this in my garden but just go around regularly yanking it out as i see it start to grow as I have quite heavy planting in my garden and wouldnt want to risk killing any plants using weed killer.

I may be completely wrong here, but I think I read something about putting canes in the ground so the bindweed climbs up it, and then you can 'paint' weedkiller type stuff onto the leaves so it only targets the weed.
I'm sorry if I've been too technical and horticultural for you , there.

Bettythebuilder is right Really good site that. All weeds are listed on the righthand side here

the best way is to get it growing well as suggested before, then blast it with a glyphosate weed killer - the growing plant pulls it down into its roots and kills it over about a week or two.

But bind weed is particularly tenacious and you probably need to repeat this a few times to finally get it to give up.

Thanks for the link furball. Excellent info -got some tips for dealing with my weed nightmare - horsetails - apparently if you grow turnips on top of them it stops them growing!
