Half my garden was cleared from mess by housing association and now the weeds inc stinging nettles are coming up.Will take me ages to try and clear it by hand!
Whats the cheapest and most effective way of keeping it weed free until i can grass seed it?

If it's a small area, boiling water works.

I I used it to try and keep ants at bay, and noticed that it killed ev erything else, too.
A hoe would work if you did it regularly.

I think the only way to really clear it is by hand. With nettles though you sometimes find once you start pulling it all comes up in satisfying chunks. Once you have weeded a section cover it with something to keep the light out(old carpet works but looks a bit messy!) until the autumn when you can seed it. Maybe do a small section of weeding at a time and keep the weed free areas covered.

You can use a blow torch thingy.

Or get some weed suppressant membrane and just cover the whole lot. Over the weeds adn everything. It will die off very very quickly.

roundup (or similar) - the concentrate stuff is cheap (like 4 pounds a bottle) and it becomes harmless on contact with soil (it's the selective herbicides which are really dodgy - I researched before using!). you need to use a sprayer, leave it a week and then clear. if you're going to lay it to lawn you should really leave it another week and then treat it again so that there are not so many weed seeds dormant in the soil.

Thanks for the replies.
Its quite a large area so weed suppressant will be to expensive. Will see how i go by hand over the weekend and get round-up or something for any that are left!
