Can anyone tell me how to control/train a cheese plant?

We have a friend who has one which has grown like a tree - straight up to his ceiling and it looks fab so we bought a little one. Thing is it seems to prefer to grow sideways rather than up and has huge long, thick roots trailing everywhere - I don;t know what to do with it!!!

move it around so all sides will reach the light? and repot it!

That's what i do - i turn it around all the time because the leaves grow up flat to the window (it's next to patio doors) The pot it's in is already so huge i can hardly move it!! It's about 3-4 feet tall. Can i cut the 'outside' roots off??
