Getting rid of old roots

I'm prepping the ground in my garden to plant a plum and apple tree. I've dug up the bushes and plants that were there. However there is still a lot of roots and plant debris, some of which is too strong for me to pull.

Does anyone know a good way to clear this. Or, alternatively, is it okay to leave it if most has been removed?

Watching with interest as my garden is set for a major overhaul this autumn, with some very well established but utterly inappropriate and boring shrubs and bushes set to go.

I've had some trees cut down, too, but plan on making raised beds over their stumps so that their roots can just stay there and slowly rot (hopefully!)

You can hire a stump grinder service. Not something that can be done oneself. We had two huge tree stumps ground out and the resulting sawdust was unbelievable, but we could then plant over the holes. It's a pressing need in Aus as the termites will move in quick smart if you leave rotting wood around, and that's just before they see your house and start chowing down on that.

echt you could be a pilgrim father. You have the same spirit. I couldn't cope with termites.
