Cutting back peonies

The RHS website says this:

It is generally best to cut the foliage to ground level as it dies back in the autumn to reduce risk of peony wilt.

So, should I do this now, or later in the year?

A bit later as all the plants are dying down a bit later due to the warm summer

I'm in the SE, cut mine back at the end of October and then give them a good thick mulch to protect from any frost damage. They've been going about 12 years now.

Thanks funny and Silver. Should I have cut off the dead flower heads already? They look a bit rubbish!
