Basil - what's eating mine?!

I have a numnber of plants in containers in my garden, including a small herb selection - basil, chives, thyme, parsley etc. They are all untouched except the basil plant which has been eaten alive! Several of the leaves have chunks taken out of them. i have carefully inspected the plant, pot and surrounding area but cannot see anything at all. We don't seem to have a problem with slugs/snails - I've only seen one or two in the year we've lived here. What is most likely enjoying the fruits of my labour, and how can I prevent it? Thanks!

I've always had a simialr problem with growing basil...it's so frustrating isn't it?!

I've always assumed it is the slugs. Check in the soil at the base of the plant and see if there are any hiding themselves away in there.

I now grow my basil in a seperate pot and bring it indoors at night. Bit of a nuisance but seems to work.

i have a small basil plant and was going to plant it outside today, not recommended then?

It would only take one to do this damage.

Well, whatever it is seems to have gone away - it's been untouched since I posted! Maybe the threat of possible MN retaliation was too much... :o
