Suggestions for a tree to provide a screen.

Can I please have some suggestions for a tree that will provide some screening for the back of my house. The road is higher than where my house sits. Anyone passing can see straight into the upstairs bedrooms over the top of an 8 foot plus tall fence. The previous owner had planted a scots pine. This did the job very well. But the tree was way too big for the area. So I would probably prefer a taller trunk and lots of leaves. This would mean some shade and I could still use the area under the tree. I live in the west of Scotland.

Any deciduous tree will not work in the winter so you need to go for an evergreen. Leylandii work but if you have more than one together you could fall foul of the tall hedges legislation and annoy your neighbours (same with any conifer). How about a couple of Italian Cypress or a Lawson's Cypress?

Thank You openyourheart. Cypress would be a good idea. We have spent the last five years removing trees from the garden that had got to too big. Some Leylandii were among the last to go. Not a neighbour problem but the maintenance was becoming beyond us.

How about bay? Laurus nobilis . And you will have bay leaves! It's quite fast growing.

How about pleached trees. We have just put a row of them along the back of our house & they look amazing. I'm so pleased. Although they'll need maintenance a couple of times a year.

I'm in a similar situation and would love a row of pleached trees - there is a house nearby with a row of them and they look stunning but to expensive for us right now. Love the idea of cypress
