Tall columnar trees

I want tall columnar trees in my garden. They need to reach 9 ft high and be evergreen. Does anyone know:

  1. Can I plant trees in planters? I mean, really..and if so, what size planter?
  1. What type of tree wd produce tall columnar growth? Needs to be evergreen with not much watering lol (something meditteranean?)

Where do you live in the UK? Have you seen something locally that you like?

My immediate thought was Italian cypress but, if I were you, I would phone one of the specialist companies and ask their advice. There are so many different varieties.

If you wanted something very cheap and fast growing you could use leylandii They are hardy and will grow anywhere (I think). I really don't like them but if you are careful and prune them regularly they may be suitable for a while, however you should check which type of leylandii and grow a slower growing variety.

I like juniper trees and they are tall upright trees. I don't know if they are good in pots though.

I use hozelock aqua pod irrigation system for my pots. It is great not having to remember to water them. It costs a bit to set up but it's worth it.

Thanks TNet. I hate watering and always forget. Not to great on pruning either. Do the Cypress trees need pruning?

I don't think they do and I think they are slow growing. They are nice looking trees.
You could ask at your local garden centre as they will know what works in your area.
