Ground cover under shrubs and trees

Our boarders are mature with trees / shrubs but the beds look really scruffy. I am going to plant ferns under the darker boarder (any evergreen ones?) but need ideas for the ones which get more light. A mixture of evergreen and non evergreen .

Any ideas?

I would like to know about this as I intend to plant such a border.

Euphorbia amygdaloides and Geranium macrorrhizum are both good for underplanting.
The Euphorbia is evergreen with lime green "flowers" (which are bracts really) in spring which look great with purple and blue flowers, Honesty works well with them and grows in shade and poor soil.
Ther are white and pink flower options with the geranium.
Both will spread and give good cover.
Alchemilla mollis and Aquilegia also seem to grow anywhere and seeds around.

Bergenia will grow just about anywhere sun, shade dry soil and clay. They just dont seem to care and are pretty much maintenance free and evergreen.
