i'm hopefully getting hold of some later this week, i plan to dig it in so it wont be on the top layer. but dh thinks the garden will stink if i do this. i'm also worried about any hygeine issues with little kiddies around?

also would it smell even whilst in the garden before use?

no it will be relatively smell free. As for hygiene, I suppose you might want to be extra vigilant about hand washing for little ones.

If it's well-rotted it shouldn't stink. I don't think the hygiene issues are any greater than with gardening in general - children (and adults) should always wash their hands when coming in from the garden and children should be encouraged not to put anything from the garden into their mouths.
