Chewed Pinks and Carnations

Every year my new pinks/dianthus get nibbled down the stems and along the roots, expiring about August, despite using new compost or different locations. What's doing this please, and what can I do to stop it?

If the roots are being affected, is it vine weevil?

I don't know - what does this look like please? Never found anything, and no other plants are ever chewed.

Vine weevil. There's lots of information on line if you google.

Thanks for the link. Never any evidence to be seen, and root damage is during summer, but thanks for help.
