Wormeries - who else has one?

I got mine back in March and am lovonh it. DD loves it too and get very excited about going to feed the wormies. Dh on the other hand finds the whole thing completely gross and disgusting. He likes the idea in theory, but the practicalities of it make him squirm.

have you found folk are wierd about your worms?

We've just put one in at work and there are quite a few people squaeamish about it here !

(PS. have you had my email about our friends ??)

sharklet · 15/05/2006 14:29

Oh yes I have was about to reply.

Isn't it funny how squeamish folk are about a few little worms. MAybe I'm just thick skinned or something!

we have one and it is great and yes some people do look at us odd when i rave about it!

CarolinaMoonfish · 15/05/2006 21:36

my mum and sister both have wormeries - I am not so much weird as piss-ripping about them.

they are really picky aren't they? you have to feed them exactly the right stuff or they die. Unlike a compost bin.

pootlepod · 15/05/2006 21:42

I have one. Have had it for about a year now. Quite attached to my worms. Having a problem with flies at the moment though- busy shredding paper to help!

sharklet · 16/05/2006 07:14

We have a compost bin too - but the wormery is for the kitchen waste mainly that and paper. Tis marvellous. But your right they are a little picky!

Not a wormery, but a butterfly thing. I can't believe I paid £18.99 for it for dd2, then had to go and order the bloomin' eggs for a further £4.50. It's basically a pop-up plastic thing, about the size of a large cake tin. Sigh.

Another wormy here. Have a can-o-worms. Recently had a bit of a disaster when it got to wet and I ended up with with worm soup in the bottom! Sad

Are on the road to recovery again now though, and I must say I am very attached to my little wiggly friends!

bumbleweed · 22/05/2006 21:27

We also have the can-o-worms. We got it last year and messed up because we bunged too much half rotted stuff in there too quickly. This year bought new worms (working out a bit pricey this saving the world business!) and have started again really slowly.

The rain is a bit of a prob tho aint it - all the worms end up in the bottom. Does anyone else have the 'rain cover'?

I agree a compost heap is easier - but not everyone has the space for one.

Those of you who are having worm troubles, suggest you look at this thread too as it may avoid all those worm probs. \link{http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=2200&threadid=156715&stamp=060521201403\here}

Find it a bit odd talking about threads and worms in same sentence - is it just me!

sharklet · 24/05/2006 08:56

I don't have a rain cap - I keep the tap open and have a some bubble wrap over them to keep the rain out. Lots of paper and card too to help keep the moisture at bay

We have a wooden one with 2 tiers made by a homeless charity in London and it doubles up as a bench aswell- fantastic!

ronnieb · 11/06/2006 20:11

yep I have a wormcity stacking unit, which is great. My dd loves to pet the worms, and gives them a hug... but she is only 2 !!

stleger · 11/06/2006 20:56

I've had mine 3 years - as usual got them as pets for the kids... Any answers to the flies?

sharklet · 12/06/2006 13:15

My 2 year old tries to hug them too! Shew loves giving the worms thier breakfast and their special worm treat! Bless her!

Flies wise we don't have too many right now. I've heard you havet o be selective about what you put to avoid them, less meat and sticky things or if you do add them cover them in lime or worm treat mix.
