Tall shrub for shady front garden

I need to plant a shrub in my front garden to help hide the neighbours garden.

It's a very shady garden. It gets a couple of hours of sunshine in the evening. The space is about 1 metre wide, and I need the shrub to be at least a metre high. We already have a large buddleja, and a couple of hydrangea plants that are doing well.

I'm liking the look of Rhododendron or Azela but they need special compost. Do I just dig it in once? Or would I need to top up every year?

Any other suggestions?

Rhododendrons and azaleas need acid soil. If you have this naturally you can just plant them without having to dig compost in. If your soil is naturally alkaline, I'd choose something else. You can tell how acid it is by the colour of your hydrangeas - are they pink or blue? Have they changed since you planted them?

Agree re: acid soil - it's a lot of work to keep it acidic unless you have it naturally.
Try looking at the RHS Plantfinder (online, free) - you type in the conditions, size etc and it churns out a list of potential options.
Could try false caster oil plant (big glossy palmate leaves), holly (but it is slow growing) chiosya ternata (if spot is sunny enough) cotoneaster (lovely red berries)... there's quite a list of things that could work.

I have ordered a Viburnum Opulus Roseum Snowball. If it covers next doors quad bike I will be very happy.
