could I take cuttings this time of year? someone with established garden of currants, plums and loads more is moving soon and I would like to 'rescue' some of his garden and put them in mine.

well it's the time of year when stuff starts to grow, so I reckon you've a good chance. I'd let them root a bit in some water before planting.

i looked at a horticultural book today and found out that anytime now till late summer is not a good time to take cuttings.

sigh.

although its not the best time of year for cuttings, you may just get away with it. i would give it a go.

or if you have the space, dig up the entire bush, with a good root ball and transplant. i did this out of necessity last year, and they've come away fine this year.
