Selling home made gingerbread/fudge from my doorstep

Does anyone know what the rules are regarding selling small amounts of home made food from your doorstep?
I live in a seaside village where many people sell jam or chutney, but I dont know whether I need any sort of council permission. I was thinking only on a small scale, maybe a few bags at a time.
