Need suggestions for bedding plants that will be in flower late May

We're having a party in late May, hopefully in the garden. I want to plant a bunch of bedding stuff to brighten things up a bit, but not spend too much ££ as we are having building work later in the summer which will trash the garden. Any ideas about flowers with a bit of impact that I could grow from seed under a cloch or in a coldframe outside (I don't have room to do seedlings inside) or am I too late? Could grow on plug plants - but would these be in flower by end of May?

i'd just get some trays of bedding plants from a garden centre. we do this each year & they last for ages. primulas seem to be good at the moment, or pansies/violas.

Marigolds last forever as do primulas and pansys. Buy some.

I was hoping to do it cheaper than buying fully grown plants as I will need quite a lot to make my almost empty borders look pretty Blush. Probably left it too late though. Pansies in a few different colours would be nice, hoxtonchick, and probably would get quite bushy if I put them in soon.
