Does anyone know anything about Rose-Breeding and naming new Roses?

I have started a thread in Other Subjects about naming a rose after Aillidh, expat's little girl. The idea would be that we would have rose named after her and that some of the proceeds of each rose sold would go to the Anthony Nolan trust which is a wonderful charity which helped expat and family during Aillidh's battle with acute myeloid leukaemia.
It seems that this is a very expensive business and I have been quoted anything between 1000 and 10000 for the service in order to first of all have the rose named and then for it to appear in catalogues nationwide.
If it is that expensive, so be it, but does anyone know if this is the only way?

Hi Chip - I've been on that thread to pledge a contribution. Don't have any knowledgeable advice to give really, other than perhaps try to find an email address of an expert (not a nursery!) to ask. Maybe email the RHS (or one of us who is a member could do that) to ask what it should cost and what sort of deal we should go for re the exclusivity to a nursery.

I don't have the exact answer you need but I picked up a leaflet yesterday at Tatton Flower Show from a rose breeder by the name of Fryers. They currently have a competion to name one of their roses, which is very beautiful. I can't find a link for you but I'm sure if you email them they may be able to help.
Otherwise contact David Austin Roses who again, may be able to give you some advice.

The thing is that it's cheap enough to just name a rose and get a bunch of them. It's when you get into selling them nationwide, which is really what we want, then it starts getting pricey and I know MNers are generous folk but when it starts running into thousands in a recession...
Lexi, the irony is that my Dad was a horticultural expert but he died ten years ago. In any case, he specialised in fruit rather than flowers. But I could ask some of his old colleagues if they could help, perhaps.
