What's eating my plants?

Something has been having a good old munch on my Aquilegia "Black Barlow" but not on the leaves on the stem! From about 10 inches up for about three or four inches all the 'bark' of the stalk is gone. What on earth would do that? Not likely i'm going to cure it but i've never seen this before and i'd love to know what caused it.

aphids/whitefly? something sap-sucking, anyway.

Have you looked on the RHS website for what Aquilegia is most susceptible to? - here: aphids, sawflies, leaf miners, caterpillars and powdery mildew

Snails. They climb up flower stems and eat the soft bit.
