Weeding gadget for non-gardener please

I am no good at gardening. But I need to get rid of some weeds, mainly between paving slabs/patio areas.

What's the best thing to use? A weedkiller spray or a tool? I saw a neighbour with a thing that looked like a flat curved knife on a long stick doing his front yard - are they any good? Thanks

If I feel organised I wear gardening gloves and use a small old garden fork. Otherwise bare hands and a bit of determination, (preferably a bad mood so as to take it out on the weeds). Best time to weed is after it has rained (not difficult this year). Others many be more technical.
