Plant recommendations for border next to conifer hedge

We are very novice gardeners, but have some how grown a shambolic very pretty cottage garden style flower bed of shrubs and perennials under-planted with herbs mixed in with bulbs, bedding plants and a even a carnivorous slug eating plant!!!

But we have a slightly shaded boarder next to a conifer hedge which has nothing in it at the moment apart from ferns which seem to think they are in charge Hmm. the bulbs we planted earlier in the year have not surfaced at all and the perennial flowered nicely but now looks a little although not totally dead Confused

We tend to buy plants we like look of when when we visit nice gardens but could do with some guidance of what to look for so it doesn't die within the first week Grin. Any recommendations???

xx

I wouldn't bother. Conifers will take all the nutrients out of the ground making it tricky for anything else to grow nearby.

Tiarella, tellima grandiflora, acanthus, geranium macrorrhizum, more ferns.

We have hardy geraniums next to a conifer hedge; the only problem is they spread. They are very pretty and flower all Summer though.

Thanks for the replies. Spread really isn't a problem as its a long border. We have handy geraniums so may try taking a cutting whilst hopefully not killing the original plant.

oooo I like the acanthus very much, that looks perfect for one of our days out souvenirs!
