Lawnmower advice

I'm a total garden ignoramus. We've moved to a bigger place and our electric mower won't reach the top half of the lawn. I'm a bit scared of petrol mowers Blush. It's only an average sized garden. The mower would live in the shed which is not terribly accessible so the lighter the better.

What's the best, easy to use, idiot-proof sort of mower? Can you get rechargeable-battery-powered ones for people who are scared of petrol?!

And does anyone want my old plug-in one? Grin

I have a new petrol mower and it is the best thing i have ever bought (slight exaggeration but i do love it)
It is 4 stroke so the petrol goes in one bit and the oil in another so no messy mixing of a 2 stroke. Easy to start, no silly cord to keep moving away from the blades, much better cut than my old qualcast and because it is self propelling all i have to do is trott along behind it.

You can get rechargeable mowers for about £250 but you could probably pick up a small petrol sp one cheaper.

I've got a long garden and I got a decent extension lead for my existing electric mower (plugged into a circuit breaker of course). However, not really good enough for the job and we have swapped to a petrol mower - but we do have quite a large lawn.

Get this it's fantastic.

We have a Mountfield petrol mower, its about 30 years old, we inherited it from DH's grandparents when we bought their house.

Its fab. No wires, no fuss. Just top up with petrol every few times, and with oil every few times. It has a dipstick for the oil just like a car.

EBay your plug in one, perfect time of year to sell Smile

I could have written Taffeta's post: I adore my ancient inherited Mountfield, it is fab. Don't be scared of petrol! I find the idea of a power cord much scarier tbh.

Right, I need to grow a pair and buy a petrol mower, I think. Will it make stripes? Grin

re the old one - I'll too idle to ebay things. I might freecycle it..

Don't get a pull start on a modern one though!!!

cantspel · 28/05/2012 16:08

If you want stripes you need a Petrol Cylinder Mower or rotary mower with a a roller at the back.

My modern mower has a pull start and one big full and it fires into life no problem at all. If money is no object and you want a modern mower have a look at the honda ones.
