Ants in the veggies!!

Is this ok? If not, how can I kill them?

I was lovingly hoeing (sp?) the weeds out between my tomatoes and peas when I noticed hundreds and thousands of little black ants swarming over the ground. I noticed a few last time I weeded but not this many.

It's a long but narrow bed (3 foot maybe) with lawn either side. It's actually a flower bed but I ran out of space so moved some veggies in. There's an ancient and very tall & woody shrub (courtesy of the previous owners) that the ants seem to be flocking to/from. It has a massive root structure so I don't fancy my chances of actually digging the bloody nest out.

Can I just ignore them? Or must they DIE?

Ants are not really a problem, they don't really eat the plants, they will probably be "milking" aphids on your veggies though.
Encourage e.g. Ladybirds which will eat the aphids and the ants should move on.

Well that's good to know, thank you! I shall have a google on how best to up our ladybird population. The children will be delighted.

Have some Thanks
