non-flowering Magnolia

Last year I planted a sapling magnolia - about 2ft high. It seemed quite happy settling in and produced some lovely big leaves. It also doubled in height.
It has only just, this last week, come into leaf - about twice as many as last year - but didn't flower first.
Is this normal for a baby tree?
It's the first magnolia that I've managed to get through its first winter so I'm ridiculously pleased with it/myself. Would hate to think it won't ever flower...

I seem to recall they take 7-10 years from seed to first flowering. Yours is probably not old enough yet!
