Wisteria - what's your's doing?

Mine is starting to get leaves, I can see buds on them. Since it was planted maybe 8/9 years ago it has only ever had 1 bloom, last year but it wasn't even a big one.

I walked past a house yesterday and I saw one that had leaves and LOADS of blooms.

So, please tell me what your wisteria is up to at the moment.

Blooms but not a lot of leaves yet but that is normal for ours.

not mine but on local pub not much in way of blooms or leaves this year.maybe not a good year.otoh my honeysuckle has flowered for first time in years.

I don't have one but two of my clients do. I've been giving them a strict regime of heavy pruning twice in winter and am pleased to say they are full of flower buds now, just about to break. The frost this weekend may ruin all that though.

We had masses of blooms this year, the best yet. Just dying back now. I was even more leased to find the new one we planted last year (off shoot from the old one) actually flowered.

Note we are generally about 2-3 weeks ahead of UK

When do I prune it? And how? (Not v green fingered).

It's a shady spot as well, does that impact it?

(Cannot believe there will be nada again this year)

You chop off the long wispy bits in Summer - they tend to grow so much I need a map to find my front door- and then in February you cut the bits down again to two- four buds.
Thant what I do and it's been fine - lovely blossom.

Mine will be two year old this year.

Honeysuckle already? My skanky one never flowers. I'm going to get a new one this year.

mycatsaysach · 04/05/2012 21:17

its already been out for about a week lynette

Wisteria with no bloom (after many many years) and I must admit had a honeysuckle that died as well.

I dont think I am cut out for this.

I've had a wisteria for a few years and it's looking lovely this year, a few blooms (at last) and leaves. Mine's in a pot though and I do forget to water it, so all this rain has done some good! Wisteria is notorious for taking years to bloom

CuttedUpPear · 05/05/2012 00:12

Prune wisteria as if it was an apple tree - build up a spur system close to the framework of the plant.
You can bring yours back to life OP but it might not flower til next year if you still have long wispy growth from last year on it now.

Mine is just about to take off - there are a few random flowers, but loads of buds. It's been there for, ooh, around15 years? Think last year was possibly the best ever year. Sensational.
