How do you know if your garden is north facing or south facing?
I think it is south facing, but what if I'm wrong?
How do you know?
If the front door faces north, is it north facing?

If you face the sun in the morning and so you are looking at it, you are east facing.
So, if you stand on your doorstep and look north, you are north facing.

The sun sets right at the end of our garden so I know it is west-facing. That means that the flower bed on the right as I look out of my back window is south-facing and gets the most sun. The bed on the left is north-facing and more shady.

South facing is best, because the sun sweeps round the whole garden; if you are north-facing the house will cast a shadow over your back garden for a lot of the day.

Look on a map - or Google maps - or use a compass. My house is on a complete N-S axis, but not the way I'd like. The front is S-facing, so my tiny front garden is blistered and charred by the sun, while some parts of my back garden never see a ray of sunshine, not even at 1pm on the 21st June.

Thanks for the help. Turns out my garden is south-west facing.

Lucky you - great orientation for a back garden

My back garden has the sun for the entire day from May to September (too much sun) and i thought it was a south facing garden but in fact it's west, I checked with a compass. My front garden is mostly in the shade during the summer months (I wish it was my back garden) and its East facing. I'm buffled as I've lived here nearly twenty years and only just properly checked as I desperately want to sort my garden out and not had much luck with it. The sun comes up from the front of the house but is on the left by ten and sets to the right at night though by September it is almost central to my back garden. I see the original post was a while ago but thought I'd still add my info as I wanted info re the Suns positioning to help me find a solution to it being too sunny in the summer.
