it is probably a very stupid question but if I start with the seeds now will I get actual vegetables growing in summer?( i'm thinking zuccini, strawberies, cucumber) or would it be next year? I'm renting a house with a garden and am unlikely to be here next year...

Yes you will! Courgettes and cucumbers wil be ready to harvest from July. You can also easily grow tomatoes, peppers, salady stuff, spinach and beans (french, runner or broad) without much space. It's probably best to buy strawberry plants rather than grow from seed. Strawberry plants have a 3-5 year life span so grow your strawberries in pots and you can take them with you when you move.

this site has some useful info and tells you when to plant everything.
