My first garden!!!

Like a poster below I have just moved from a flat to a ground floor place with our first garden. (dont' want to hijack another thread)

My first jobs I think will be to put up a hedge at the back of a strip of lawn that leads from my back door to the fence at the back of the garden of the houses on the next street (IYKWIM) How do you get a hedge? Do you buy the little plants and if so how long do they take to grow? It won't need to be huge - maybe 10 feet long - and am assuming (hoping) they are quite easy to plant and look after as they seem to be everywhere.
Also I want to take up old paving stones in an area outside the back door and probably put grass in. Should I just break up the stones and get someone to come and take all the rubble away and then rake over the soil and plant some grass seeds?
First post on this topic and I will probably be back for lots more advice but these 2 things would do for starters Grin

Hmm, why have a hedge next to a wall? It would mean you losing garden space. Try climbers, but not ivy or Russian vine. They are buggers.

Which direction does the back fence face? This would influence the climber you would use.

For your lawn, pull up the paving stones, but don't chuck them right away, as you might find a use for one or two.

if your garden is 10 feet wide, how long is it? You might as well turfs seed.

I meant turf as seed.
