planting beside a yew hedge

I have just planted a yew hedge: I know it will take years to establish. I am now looking for plants with light coloured leaves/ flowers to create a herbaceous or mixed border. I have a yellow leaved choisya, which looks nice. I'm thinking fuchsias, possibly a couple of roses. Any suggestions? I want mostly low shrubs/ plants as I have just hacked back a pile of undergrowth and want to create a lighter vista from the window.

what side is the border going to be on, will it be in sunshine or in the shade of the hedge?

It will be in sunshine.

its fine to plant by the hedge but just remember it does make it difficult to collect the clippings
