Can you recommend and apple tree, please?

I'd love an apple tree but we don't have a huge amount of space. I know you can get dwarf ones and all sorts but I have no idea what to look for and feel overwhelmed when I look at the garden centre. I guess ideally I'd like one that grows to 5-6 feet and spreads a little but not too much. I don't want an upright/ ballerina tree. Any suggestions?

Hi Grockle, Just like you I don't like the dwarfs.... Got two just now, one for green apples, didn't do anything weather was way to wet and therefore no bees; the red one has a few apples but they turned out so tiny not what we were expecting.

My local garden centre has plenty of workers so that helps when not sure of what to get, especially up North like here Scotland, not every variety will survive, like I said, rain rain rain. But as I'm in the process of doing research for a bigger but still small size, the rule of thumb, is that if you buy just one, make sure that it is recommended as a SELF-POLINATING apple tree, if not, you'll get a tree with foliage (leaves) but none of them apples. Just check with staff if not google (I prefer Bing and Yahoo!) for self-polinating trees definition or best just type wikipedia.org in your bar at the top and in the space type in self-polinating apple trees.
