not according to this:

The poppy seeds and fixed oil that can be expressed from the seed are not narcotic, because they develop after the capsule has lost the opium-yielding potential

from here

But poppyseeds that you eat can caus you to have a positive narcotics test in some hypersensitive tests

IOTAnnenbaum · 04/12/2005 17:50

is that a false positive then MB?

Blandmum · 04/12/2005 17:52

have a shufti at this
snopes shows it is true

IOTAnnenbaum · 04/12/2005 17:55

Blandmum · 04/12/2005 17:59

I thought i could handle it, but I was up to 3 bagles before breakfast.......

IOTAnnenbaum · 04/12/2005 17:59

you'll have to cut down if they introduce random drugs testing at school

katymac · 04/12/2005 18:03

Any more info I can quote (I of course was right all poppies do have opium)

They all have some opium but not in 'usable' quantities IYSWIM.

The amount will also depend on the growing conditions etc

katymac · 04/12/2005 18:12

So it's just like saying a tomatoe that isn't "Money Maker" isn't worth growing as it doesn't produce enough tomatoes?

They were saying that only an Opium Poppy can produce Opium - I said any poppy produces a tiny bit

All poppies, IIRC produce, small amounts of opium, but those that grow in the UK would not produce enough to be worth extracting.

It is like sugar beat, it has lots of sucrose present, and we grow it to extract the sugar. Carrots also have some sugar...this is why they taste sweet, but not enough to extract sugar from IYSWIM. What little there is would be lost in the extraction process.
