What is eating my clematis?

Help!!
I have several clematis both evergreen and deciduous ones, and suddenly all the new shoots and leaves are being eaten Sad

Could it be earwigs? My Bug spray doesn't seem to cover earwigs according to the label and although I hate using insecticide, my plants are being destroyed!

Yes I think slugs are getting them at the bottom but the new growth especially the clematis that is climbing an arch is really high up - maybe brand of evil super slug with wings Grin
