What to grow in Troughs - advice

Have acquired some 4' troughs which I want to use to soften the look of our gravel frontage. Can anyone recommend plants which need minimal maintenance, like sun(south facing) and won't struggle in a container. Preferably to grow up to a metre and provide an interesting display each year. tia

I've had lots of success growing the woodier herbs in troughs like that. Sage, rosemary, lavenders. If you mix them up with other drought-resistant options like Potentilla you could get an interesting as well as fragrant display.
