courgette chaos

Morning all.

The three courgette plants in my raised bed are growing out of control. They're absolutely huge and are starting to suffocate the other bits and pieces I've got growing in there. Could I cut some of the leaves back or would that completely knacker them?
Advice please gardening goddesses!

I trimmed the bigger leaves off ours last year to let light thru and they did fine.

Cut them back, you will still have plenty of fruits and of better quality, otherwise they are triffids out of control.

muttering about revenge for the forthcoming summer of every meal having to involve courgette....

Passmethecake · 17/07/2011 12:59

Right. That's the courgettes felled.
Anybody want any courgettes? Anybody? Anybody at all? I've got big ones, small ones, some as big as your head.
Oh well. Looks like it's courgette risotto for tea. Again;)

Good woman, taken control! I do not jest, last year I was oppressed by being all things to all courgettes (slight exaggeration) but you get my drift. Giving my self a break this year. Dh was chatted up into planting some unknown "marrow" plant, but so far I have resisted "worrying" about it. so far. Must not look.

Last year during the great courgette glut I took to slicing them and baking them in the oven with just a little spray of oil. I then froze them. They turn into a bit of a mush but it is a truly delicious mush.

Courgette cake. Turns them into something less wholesome that even the children will eat.

Fritters? nice with a touch of sage and garlic.

MissFoodie · 21/07/2011 16:58

am v jealous....my plants have only produced male flowers so far.....not a single bloody courgette.....!!!!

RoseC · 21/07/2011 17:00

Courgette cake is great. An ex-colleague swears by cutting them up (if you really, really can't eat them fresh) and freezing, to be dumped into bolognese/sauces during the winter.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/07/2011 17:03

courgette bread is nice
courgette soup (with garlic and celery) not bad
stuffed courgette.

Dazmum · 21/07/2011 17:34

Me too MissFoodie, I've had one with a wizened end....
