I'm so stupid, I put down way too many grass seeds........

Can anyone offer any advice please.
At first the grass was growing beautifully, lovely and green but it then started to go yellow in large patches and It looks like its dying, I googled it and I'm 99% sure i've put down too much seed and it's over crowded and choking, I really had no idea that too much seed was such a bad thing, I'm too embarrassed to tell you how much seed I put down!

Is there ANYTHING I can do to save it? its quite a large area, what would happen if I tried to thin it out with a rake? would that also kill the remaining grass?
I really would appreciate some help, this is the first time I've had a garden and was so proud of all that beautiful new green grass.

I'd just mow it regularly and pray for rain. Grass is pretty tough stuff, goes yellow and looks totally dead & dusty when it gets too dry, but reappears green after it's had a good soaking. I've never really heard of over-seeding... usually the garden birds make off with most of it so you have to put down plenty!

I agree with Cogito. I think its the current dry spell at the moment. I live in East Anglia and thankfully it did rain and quite heavily over the weekend, our grass was looking really dead but has started to recover now quite quickly, we would have been looking at a hosepipe ban shortly.

Try and water it as much as you can.
