Lilies in fish pond keep dying??

I have turned a half wooden barrel into a fish pond with 3 goldfish. I purchased two lily pads at big expense (to me) which I thought would be decorative and be interesting for the fish to swim round. The fish are fine. The lilies keep dying. The fish can't bite them, I have used the right compost moved them out of the sun. Does anyone please have any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

Hi, my partner used to own an aquatic shop and he said one of the things is how deep your barrel is if its too deep this will kill certain lilies, if you know what type of lily and how deep the barrel is i will ask again, he said lots of other things as well as causes but he was busy, give me as much info as poss and i will ask him again tonight, if i can pin him down i will get him to reply himself

Thank you for responding! The barrel is about 22" deep, but I elevated the lilles so they would float. I am going to try and re-pot them with new aqwa compost and sink them again. If they fail this time, I will just get plastic ones.

Thank you again! D x
