What's wrong with my clematis?

We have a huge clematis montana that's about 6 years old, has clambered all over a pergola and usually looks gorgeous by now. The buds are there all over the whole plant, but it's suddenly faded and started to wilt as if it's not been watered. The other plants in the same area are all fine, including several other kinds of clematis. Is this the dreaded clematis wilt, and if so, what can I do?

One problem - we've just sold the house, and one of the key factors was the lovely garden and established climbers... :( so don't want to have to hack down the whole thing and end up with the pergola looking totally bare.

Weird. Could be, but it's not actually that common I don't think. Have you checked the main stems near the ground? Could anything have soaked into the ground round the roots?
