Late frost cover

Against my better judgement, or rather my usual impatience enthusiasm, I've planted out seedlings like sunflowers far too early. I just had a look at the weather forecast for the week ahead and it turns out it will be heading down to 1 degree for a couple of nights.

I'm in a rented property and will be moving to sunnier climes soon, so don't really want to fork out for fleece. emoticon

Is there a diy alternative for fleece? Newspaper? Cardboard or some such?

Many thanks in advance, as a newbie to the gardening section and lurker for the last 6 months I've learned a lot from greenthumbed MNers; so thanks for all the advice so far also!
