What will look nice under a pergola

We've recently put up a pergola between the house and garage. It all looks a bit grey but I am putting up some lights but what can I use for plants?

They will have sunlight and warmth but no direct sunlight.

Looking for plants rather than flowers as I tend to kill flowers easily for some reason!

Someone suggested japanese acers as they like shelter?

We've got a pergola is a similar situation and we have a japanese acer - it has trebled in size in 3 years and looke lovely in the summer and autumn.
I also have honeysuckle growing on it and I am tempted to add a climbing rose
